Military authorities in Yerevan have denied a report from Baku alleging that Armenia opened fire at the border with Azerbaijan.

Baku claimed that Armenian forces used firearms to target Azerbaijani army positions located in the direction of Ganza in Azerbaijan’s western exclave of Nakhichevan on Thursday evening.

“The statement by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense that on August 15, at around 6:10 p.m., units of the Armenian Armed Forces opened fire towards Azerbaijani positions in the southwestern part of the border zone does not correspond to reality,” the Armenian Ministry of Defense stated late on Thursday.

In its response, the Armenian Ministry of Defense also reiterated Yerevan’s proposal for a mechanism to investigate border violation claims.

“Through diplomatic channels, the office of the Armenian prime minister proposed to the office of the president of Azerbaijan the creation of a bilateral mechanism to investigate cases of ceasefire violations,” it said.

Official Baku has not yet responded to repeated Armenian proposals for such a mechanism.
